2016 Oxford County Budget Finalized

The tax levy will be increased by 1.99% after a heated discussion in the council chambers today

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council has approved the 2016 budget.

Warden of Oxford County, David Mayberry, explains how everything went this morning.  "This is a time when council was concerned about increasing the tax levy, we have taken slightly more out of reserves, and we have also postponed a number of projects for possibly next year.  We want to make sure that we don't add to much of a burden to tax payers at anyone time, but we want to come up with a fair balance on what do we pay for today and what do we pay for tomorrow."

What turned out to be the most talked about item on the agenda saw a few slight alterations to lower the tax levy.  CAO of Oxford County, Peter Crockett, spoke to Heart FM about what happened.  "So we started out this morning at about a 2.6% increase in the tax levy, as a result of the budget that was in front of Council they made some revisions, took more money out of reserves in order to reduce the impact, and at the end of the day have approved a budget that is a 1.99% increase in the tax levy."

Crockett discusses how much property taxes will increase.  "That number we will have to calculate but we know at 2.6% it was $6 for the average household in Oxford, so it will be less than $6."  It took nearly 4 meetings for the budget to be finalized, and the projects that have been postponed will continue to be examined throughout 2016 to get ready for implementation by 2017.
