Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy in the Southwestern Public Health Unit

Dr. Joyce Lock is encouraging those who may be on the fence about getting the COVID-19 vaccine to consult their doctor.

SWPH - Southwestern Public Health is set to introduce new capacity limits tomorrow.

This will only impact local municipalities with high rates of transmission and/or low vaccination rates. The capacity limits will be in place for most indoor settings, including places of worship. Dr. Joyce Lock was asked yesterday about vaccine hesitancy from religious groups.

"We have in the past worked through community connections who are affiliated with these communities, to provide information, reliable information, often through channels and sometimes in language that is appropriate to some of these faith communities and we have sent letters to our places of worship as well, providing guidance on how to worship safely."

Dr. Lock says the Health Unit is trying to address vaccine hesitancy in a number of different ways.

"We do offer vaccine clinics to anyone, lot's of appointments are available, we do regular pop up clinics in areas with low vaccination rates and will continue to do that. Our goal in the short term is to get as many 5-11 years vaccinated as we can, that being said, we haven't forgotten about being available in these areas with our pop up clinics."

Dr. Lock says she understands some people are hesitant and advises anyone on the fence, to consult their doctor.

"We continue to work with our health care providers to encourage discussions with their patients over concerns around the vaccine, so that if anyone has a concern over the vaccine, they can get them addressed by a trustworthy individual. We continue to provide resources and information on our web site as well for people to review."
