Arsonist Sentenced

One of the men involved in the Iron Grill explosion gets house arrest

WOODSTOCK - A Scarborough man who admitted to setting the Iron Grill Restaurant on fire has been sentenced.

Usama Akhter pleaded guilty to arson in the 2009 explosion which left him with burns to 75 percent of his body.

He told a Woodstock court that he and his now deceased best friend, Sarfraz Ahmed had started the blaze but that he was deeply ashamed.

Akhter was given a sentence of two years less a day of house arrest. Akhter requires a full time caregiver, something a prison would not be equipped to handle. He was also given two years of probation.

A third man involved in the blaze, Arun Rajendiran was sentenced earlier this year to two years for his part in the explosion but died this month in prison.
