Back to School Safety Reminders from Woodstock Police

It's the first day of school and Shaylyn Jackson with the Woodstock Police Service has a few tips for kids, parents and drivers hitting the roads this morning.

WOODSTOCK - It's the first day of school Oxford County and beyond.

For the first time since last March, kids will be walking to school and school buses will hit the roads. Shaylyn Jackson with the Woodstock Police Service says some parents will be driving their kids to school and they won't be able to stop in front of the building to quickly drop them off.

"It creates a disruption of flow and traffic, it causes problems for buses and then when you have kids climbing in and out of vehicles, stepping out onto roadways, it can become quite dangerous and we want to make sure we can avoid any type of hazard like that."

Jackson says the no-stopping zones are there for a reason. Drivers also need to be aware of the 40 kilometre speed limit and keep an eye out for school buses.

She says it's also important to safely plan for kids who are out of practice walking to school.

"It is really important for parents to sit down with their kids and have a discussion and plan out there route to school each day. It is important for kids to stick to the same route, not taking the shortcuts, stick the main roads with plenty of visibility."

Kids walking to school need to be aware of their surroundings at all times and it's also a good idea for them to walk in groups.
