Canada Post Workers Strike Across Oxford County

WOODSTOCK - The Canada Post rotating strikes have hit Oxford County.

Workers spent most of the day walking the picket lines in front of the Canada Post buildings.

They are picketing today in Woodstock, Tillsonburg, Ingersoll and even next door in Stratford today. Vice President of Woodstock Ingersoll Local 634 Stephen Gilbert says one of their biggest issues is pay equity.

"For the rural carriers, they make far less and even though they won in arbitration, Canada Post has refused to pay that out and the rural carriers are paid far less than anyone else in this sector, not just with Canada Post but the sector in general with Purolator or UPS."

Another key issue is health and safety for the mail carriers. Gilbert says they appreciate all of the support today.

"We will take any support we can get, we just want to show the people that we are an integral part of the community and we thank everyone that is supporting us through this."

Canada Post says the union continues to escalate its strike activity, adding more communities each day and shutting down major processing centres for extended periods.
