Celebrating Woodstock Athletes

Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame (submitted)

The Woodstock Sports Wall Of Fame will happen tomorrow, honouring past athletes and teams who competed in Woodstock.

WOODSTOCK - Some of the Friendly's City's past athletes will be honoured at the 2018 Woodstock Sports Wall Of Fame.

This year's induction ceremony will see 5 inductees, who were all selected by the Woodstock Recreation Advisory Committee. The ceremony honours past athletes and teams who competed in Woodstock.

City councillor and member of the Woodstock Recreation Advisory Committee, Mark Schadenberg says it's a great event for everyone to get together.

"What's great about this event always is it's a super time to have a reunion, for the players who are in attendance, so you would guess about 10 or 12 of them would be there for sure. What definitely is part of this event is to have a reunion, see some old friends and maybe people that were competitive and younger teammates of theirs twenty years ago or so."

Schadenberg says cross-country skier Mary Thompson will be among those local athletes who are inducted.

"Mary Thompson has significant accomplishments as an athlete. Nordic skiing, or cross-country skiing if you prefer, both at the Ontario high school level, but she's competed for Canada at the World University Games twice."

Thompson will be inducted as the Female Athlete of The Year. She represented Laurentian University when she competed in Turkey in 2011 and in China in 2009 respectively.

In addition to Thompson, Seth Yates will be honoured with the Male Athlete of The Year and the 2003 Woodstock Wranglers ‘A’ minor peewee baseball team, who beat Georgetown in the Ontario Baseball Association Championship.
