Changes To Library Board

Oxford County Council is having staff look at legislative change options before they become the board of governance for the Oxford County Library.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council is reviewing all options before acting as the board for the Oxford County Library.

Low attendance numbers at Oxford County Library meetings have made council look into changing the make up of the library board for now.

Warden for Oxford County Council Larry Martin says council has to comply with the Public Libraries Act and that it will some time to complete.

"Right now there's provincial legislation and certain requirements that you have to comply with and it is a lengthy procedure in order to get these changed. So what we're proposing tonight is something to get us through these hurdles until we can explore the options and what changes are available to us, and if we want to go down that road when we find out what the changes can be."

Council passed a resolution during last night's council meeting making some changes to the library board. The board will be made up of seven members, comprised of four members from council and three members from the public.

CEO Chief Librarian Lisa Miettinen says a board of governance can improve attendance at meetings.

"I think we can look at ways to make it easier for attendance, so perhaps looking at changing the times. Perhaps doing it later in the day, if that suits people who work. Currently our board meetings have been meeting at 2 o'clock on a Monday afternoon and for people who work full-time it's been difficult."

The Striking Committee will select the board members at a council meeting on February 13th.
