City Councillor Reaches out to High School Students in Time for the Upcoming Election

Councillor Jerry Acchione spoke to students from St. Mary's High School on why they should vote when they become old enough

WOODSTOCK - The debates are over and now it is only a matter of hours before Canadians will head to the polls.

While many are concerned about the number of people who will cast their ballot, one City Councillor made a stop at a unusual location.  Councillor Jerry Acchione decided to reach out to high school students.  "I was in St. Mary's High school, talked to the grade 10 civics class, and talked about the importance of voting.  They are 15 years old but you have to start somewhere, next election they will be eligible to vote. Taking the next 3 years and learning about the different party's and just getting that interest started is key."

This was Councillor Acchione's 3rd appearance at the school and he conducted a mock election that had interesting results.  "The kind of experiment we did was one at the very start of the class, everybody voted and then we talked about why they voted the way they did, and everything else.  We brought up all the parties, what their positions are, after they voted again it changed.  Then we did it one more time all 3 votes basically swung different ways."

Councillor Acchione explains what he talked about with the class and what he hopes everyone will do on Monday.  "The interest to vote, the importance of voting, and as well as learning what each of the parities platforms are.  Any class at all that would like a guest speaker I would be more than happy to come.  Please get out to vote, your vote does matter, but make sure you know why your are voting for the party you are."
