Council Commits Over $2 Million for Blossom Park Housing

The Blossom Park affordable housing will be demolished and rebuilt with 30 one bedroom units.

WOODSTOCK - Oxford County Council has voted to expand the affordable housing project on Blossom Park Road in Woodstock. A total of $2.15 million will be added to the project to ensure the building will provide 30 one bedroom units once completed.

The current housing unit on Blossom Park Road will be demolished to build a brand new building. Warden David Mayberry tells Heart FM current Blossom Park residents will be moved to another affordable housing unit when the construction takes place.

"Indwell is also working at the Harvey Woods Loft and there's 26 units there that they're working on. The idea is that they would finish Harvey Woods, move people from Blossom Park to Harvey Woods, build a new Blossom Park, and people can potentially move back if they wanted."

The new Blossom Park building will be the first multi-residential affordable housing project built to the Passive House Standard. Although a Passive House Standard project is more expensive to conduct up front, Mayberry says it will save its residents money in the long run.

"We believe that quite often the people that are living in these facilities are usually struggling economically, so if we can save them a few dollars on their heating that'll be good money they can spend on food and other things."

Residents living in the new building could save 80-90 percent on their energy bills.

The money for the expansion is coming out of a budget for an affordable housing project in Tillsonburg that hasn't come to fruition. The county is currently looking for partners who would like to help move the Tillsonburg project along.
