County Budget Talks Begin

Budget deliberations begin today for Oxford County.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County council is back at it today with the first of two special budget meetings.

The 2019 Business Plan and Budget Draft proposes a general levy of 59.4 million dollars, which would mean an increase of 5.8% over 2018.

With the County’s property tax assessment base growing by $30 million to an estimated $308.8 million, the average single family detached residential property valued at $263,813 would see municipal taxes increase by $20 for the year if the budget is approved.

CAO Peter Crockett says the Draft Budget looks at everything.

"We are starting this morning with our overall draft budget, so that is capital and operating, it includes everything that goes in and out of the County of Oxford, whether it is water or sewer rates or the tax side, provincial funding, all of our programs and services."

The overall draft budget is currently set at $214.5 million dollar overall budget. $52.4 million would be invested in capital projects. Crockett says staff have looked at a lot of factors to create this draft budget.

"Over the course of the summer, we did a consultation with the community to get an overall idea of their level of satisfaction with the services we provide and where they thought there were issues. We put all of that together to put together a draft proposal package and it is important to know that it is a draft budget package that is in front of council right now."

The budget process will continue again on Monday and then will have a final reading in the New Year. You can read more about the budget online here.
