County Council Delves Into Excess Soil Proposal

Oxford County Council is digging into a provincial Excess Soil Regulatory Proposal and voicing their concerns

Oxford County Council is supporting the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change's Excess Soil Regulatory Proposal, but they are noting some concerns.

The proposed regulation would create a standard for the movement and care of excess soils in the province.

Warden David Mayberry says council and Zero Waste Oxford are voicing their concerns.

"We want to make sure that the soil that is moved is moved as little as possible distance-wise which is a greenhouse gas issue, but also that it sort of stays in the environment in which it came from and we are not transporting problems from one area to another."

Mayberry says these comments have been officially submitted to the province.

"This is a step along the way in the process of getting an Excess Soil Regulation and we'll be following it closely to make sure that our comments were heard and acted on."

The province will revisit their proposed regulation after they view all comments received from municipalities.
