Extreme Cold Alert

Oxford County Public Health has issued an extreme cold with temperatures expected to dip below minus 15 tonight.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Public Health has issued a cold weather alert for the next three nights.

Temperatures are expected to dip below minus 15 tonight and the cold snap will continue over the next few days according to Environment Canada. Cold weather alerts are issued when Environment Canada forecasts an air temperature below -15°C or a wind chill below -20°C.

Daytime temperatures, although colder than normal, will provide some relief from the overnight lows, with forecast highs of -8°C on Thursday, -6°C on Friday, and -5°C on Saturday. The average high for this time of year is -2°C.

Residents are reminded to take precautions to avoid the risks of frostbite and hypothermia.

Those most vulnerable to the effects of the cold include older adults, infants and young children, outdoor workers, those who like outdoor sports such as skiing and hiking, and homeless persons and others who do not have shelter, proper clothing or food.

Anyone without a place to stay can go to the Inn Out of the Cold shelter at the Old St. Paul's Anglican Church at 723 Dundas Street in Woodstock.

Inn Out of the Cold can be contacted through Operation Sharing at 519 539-3361. The Salvation Army in Woodstock's Emergency Housing also provides temporary housing to families for a period of up to six weeks. This program can be reached by calling 519 532-2649 and leaving a message.
