Fire Prevention Division Is a Busy Squad

On going training at the Woodstock Fire Department is a priorty not only for prefessional development on the squad but to provide the best service, especially in fire prevention.

WOODSTOCK - The month of December is a busy one for the Woodstock Fire Department as the prevention division addresses complaints, request and follow up inspections.

Lisa Woods, Public Information Coordinator explains the process.

"If we received a complaint about a property, we are obliged to act on that and do an inspection.  Once we have done the initial inspection, often there are repeat and follow up inspections to be done to make sure they are in compliance with the fire code."

Mandatory inspections happen at multi unit dwellings, apartments, commercial and industrial buildings.  Fire drill observations inspections are also completed for all vulnerable occupancies such as retirement and nursing homes.  These inspections happen with the goal of minimizing the otherwise typical increase of fires seen over the holiday season.

On going training at the Woodstock Fire Department is a priority not only for professional development on the squad but to provide the best service, especially in fire prevention.

In the last month, the Woodstock Fire Department had the opportunity to apply to the newest trainings offered by the Ontario Fire Marshal.  Seventeen applications were submitted on behalf of the staff to enhance and further their knowledge and advance in professional development.

Leading up to the holidays the Prevention Divison focused on media and educational fire safety messages, these messages continue to stay the same.  Woods says they are simple things to remember.

"Make sure there are smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms are working and that they have a home escape plan."

Home owners, Landlords and Tenants should contact the Fire Prevention Division to discuss Fire Code requirements if they have any questions.
