Flavoured Tobacco Goes Up in Smoke

Effective January 1st flavoured tobacco has been banned from being sold in stores

OXFORD COUNTY - With the new year come new regulations for tobacco products.

Tobacco Control Coordinator for Oxford County Public Health and Emergency Services Gemma Urbani says flavoured tobacco has gone up in smoke. "Regulations came into effect January 1st. And they will prohibit the sale of tobacco products containing flavouring with the exemption of menthol and clove flavouring which will be exempt until January 1st 2017."

Urbani says flavoured tobacco was very tempting for young people. "Research does show that a lot of the youth try flavoured tobacco products first and then can graduate to other tobacco products. So that's why the Ministry has decided to take another stab at flavoured tobacco."

There are also new regulations for e-cigarettes as well. "Coming into effect on January 1st was the prohibition of sale to anyone under the age of 19 for e-cigarettes," Urbani says. "So just similar to tobacco you have to be 19 years of age or older and vendors are required to ask for ID for anyone who appears under the age of 25 to buy tobacco and electronic cigarettes."

Oxford County has been leading the way in smoke free initiatives - we were one of the first municipalities to have a smoke free outdoor space bylaw come into effect.

The county also has programs in place to help you kick the habit for good. Call the county and they can help get you on the right track.
