Flu Bug Going Around Oxford

Oxford County Public Health has recorded 8 cases of the influenza this month, including three outbreaks at long term care facilities.

Oxford County Public Health is reminding people it is not too late to get your flu shot after a spike in flu activity in the region.

The flu bug has come late this year with 8 cases reported during the month of February, including three outbreaks at long term care facilities. The flu season started slow in Oxford with only one case reported as of January, however it seems to have come late this year, normally it peaks around November and December. Program Supervisor at Oxford County Public Health tells Heart FM it is not to late to get your flu shot.

"If you haven't been immunized, you can still get immunized, either through your physicians office or a local pharmacy that is offering the flu shot or at the Health Unit."

Reddick says we are seeing this year that the flu viruses we are getting this year do match the vaccine quite well and are best protection you can get from the flu.

"Unlike last year what we are seeing this year is the flu viruses we are seeing do match the flu virus really well, that doesn't happen every flu season, sometimes we do get a bit of a mismatch but this season it is a good match."
