Fusion Youth Centre Cultivates Green Thumbs

IDCI students got their hands dirty in a gardening Health and Wellness Session at the Fusion Youth Centre

INGERSOLL - Something good is growing over at the Fusion Youth Centre.

Grade 9 students at IDCI were able to get their hands dirty and plant some fruits and vegetables as part of a Health and Wellness Session thanks to a donation from Heeman's Garden Centre.

Manager of the Fusion Youth Centre Andrea Brown says they wanted to show these young people another way they can deal with stress and other mental health challenges.

"Basically it was in response to the increase in mental health issues in Oxford County schools and they wanted to do something that would show the students health and wellness initiatives."

Brown says Heeman's was very supportive then the Fusion Centre approached them.

"We just mentioned that we were looking for donations, that we have a garden, and we were looking to move forward with our nutrition program. Heeman's was very open to supporting the program and providing the fruits and vegetables."

Although it was a one time session for the students, members of the Fusion Centre will be reaping the benefits for quite some time.

"We sort of pictured them using the fruits and vegetables as they're ready for the nutrition program and daily cooking," Brown says. "Maybe doing some canning, that sort of thing - making salsa."
