Give Farm Vehicles Space

Leave a little extra time for travel at this time of year - farm equipment is back out on the roads.

It's harvest season in Oxford County and you might notice a lot more slow moving vehicles in rural parts of the County.

The OPP are preaching patience for motorists and reminding them to only pass when it is safe to do so. Constable Stacey Culbert tells Heart FM they have seen a number of preventable collisions happen over the years involving farm equipment.

"It was as recent as last year where we had a fatality involving someone that was passing a farm vehicle. We have also had a number of really close calls as well where people are trying to pass farm equipment. It's one of those things that you have to be diligent, is it going to make that extra five seconds that you take to make sure it is a cautious decision to pass that large vehicle on the roadway that is going a little bit slower than you or it could be seconds that could be saving your life."

Culbert says we have to watch for vehicles displaying the bright orange slow moving sign and be extra cautious because they will have blind spots.

"You have to be extra cautious, reduce your speed, staying well back from the farm vehicles. They will have blind spots, so if you are too close to that vehicle and then go out to pass suddenly, they may be indicating a turn with a hand signal that you don't see, you have to make sure that you are passing when it is safe to do so, not passing on double lines unless it is safe to do so."
