Grandpa Bob's Walk for Louie

'Grandpa Bob' Facca walking to raise funds for Duchenne muscular dystrophy for grandson Louie

WOODSTOCK – A London grandfather's 4,000 km trek winding from Quebec City to Winnipeg will reach Woodstock Thursday afternoon.

Grandpa Bob, or Bob Facca is walking to raise money and awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy in support of his six-year-old grandson, Louie, who lives with the disease.

Facca says he's following in the footsteps of Jesse's Journey founder, John Davidson.

"Twenty years ago, he pushed his boy in his wheelchair across Ontario and then a couple years after that he decided to walk across Canada to raise funds for research to find a cure."

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is an inherited degenerative disease that occurs in roughly one out of every 4,000 boys. According to Muscular Dystrophy Canada, the muscles of its victims become weaker as the boys get older because their bodies cannot make the muscle protein called dystrophin.

"This makes the muscle cells weak and they gradually break down," the authority states in a pamphlet on their website.

Grandpa Bob invites donors to visit the section of the Jesse's Journey website dedicated to his walk, text BOB to 45678, or if you see them out on the road, pull over and hand them a donation.

Facca's team is about halfway to its goal of $1 million, according to their website.
