Greenpeace Supports Demonstration Project in Oxford County

A proposed Virtual Net Metering Demonstration Project in Oxford County is being backed by Greenpeace.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County's proposed Virtual Net Metering Demonstration Project is being backed by one of the most well known environmental organizations out there; Greenpeace.

The province's Net Metering Program allows consumers to produce their own renewable energy on site. Those who produce excess energy can also send it over to the grid in order to receive a credit on their next energy bill.

Warden David Mayberry believes Oxford County would be the perfect place to test out a Virtual Net Metering Program.

"We are willing to demonstrate for them so they can feel a little more comfortable in developing their policies."

The Virtual Net Metering Demonstration Project would help the province create an official policy.

Mayberry says Greenpeace supporting a trial in Oxford really shines a light on the county's green initiatives.

"It shows that people beyond Oxford County recognize that Oxford is trying to demonstrate some leadership for the future of our planet and try to address some of the issues we are facing now."

Greenpeace has sent a letter to Oxford County and Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault.

County Council has already approved up to $2.5 million in solar installations, which could help offset the demand of county owned facilities.
