Habitat Looking for Families

Habitat for Humanity is looking for families for its builds in the Friendly City. That process starts next Tuesday night with an information meeting at Habitat's new Woodstock Re-Store. The meeting runs from 6PM-7:30PM. Habitat for Humanity's Regional CEO Jeff Duncan says first and foremost, the ideal family has to have a need for new housing. "What we find with many of our families is they're paying 35-40% of their income to housing, which is 10% more than what the government says is affordable, so that automatically is a challenge for the family. The housing that they're in is generally undersized, it could be sub-standard housing even where it maybe is not being well cared for." They also have to be willing to dedicate 500-hours of "sweat equity" towards the build, or other volunteer work. And they still have to pay the monthly mortgage, but won't have to come up with a down payment. Duncan says they hope to line up more than one family, with plans to start at least two builds in Woodstock this year. "My goal is to get the first house started, and then as quickly as possible...to get another family or two in behind so we can start the training process and do the other things, so that we have a small pool of families that we can plan our builds for." Habitat is working with local developer Len Reeves on finding sites for the builds, which will be announced in the coming months. They've also received a huge boost to their funding of the project through a donation from Toyota Canada.
