Hardeman Supports Back to Work Legislation

Local MPP Ernie Hardeman says he was disappointed to see the NDP playing politics yesterday on a bill that would have put College Students back in class.

WOODSTOCK - A bid to end a strike by college faculty in Ontario will come before the province's legislature again today.

The governing Liberals tried to push through back-to-work legislation yesterday, but the N-D-P refused to give their consent to a bill that needed unanimous support. Local MPP Ernie Hardeman says he was disappointed to see the NDP playing politics yesterday.

"If the two sides weren't talking, what can the government do other than to step in and order them back to work. I think it is kind of crass politics to say we are going to drag it out for another week or two because we want to have full and wholesome debate on the back to work legislation, it doesn't make sense to me. Yesterday when the Premier and the Government said they were going to introduce the motion, if we could have had unanimous consent in the house, this all could have been settled yesterday afternoon."

Hardeman is hopeful they can work out a deal soon to get the students back in class after a special sitting in the legislature that starts this afternoon.

"At the present time, the Government has said they are going to introduce the back to work legislation bill. We as a party are going to be supporting it, we believe that something should of happened a long time ago, it's silly to go 5 weeks and still be right where you started from and then have to bring this type of legislation forward. This could have been done in the 1st week, the 2nd week, the 3rd week, it's strange that it had to take this long but the fact that it's happening, we are going to support it to get these students back to class."

The special meeting is happening this afternoon and their is hope that students could be back in class as early as next week.
