Health Canada Advises Home Radon Testing

Health Canada is urging Canadians to start testing their homes for a naturally occurring gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is a radioactive gas that can seep from the ground into homes through foundation cracks or gaps around pipes. Humans can't detect it, but hardware stores sell inexpensive and easy tests. Health Canada recommends homeowners use those tests for a minimum of three months starting in the fall, once windows and doors are closed. It is estimated that 16 per cent of lung cancer deaths in Canada are caused by indoor radon exposure.
