ZORRA TOWNSHIP - The future is looking bright in Zorra Township with plenty of talent on display at the Annual Heroes of Zorra Spelling Bee.

Leah Lockhart from the Thamesford Public School came in first place in the competition for Grade 5 and under. Macey Taylor from Zorra Highland Park Public School was the first runner up.

Madeline Roddick from the Thamesford Public School came in first place in the grade 6-8 competition and Monica Payne, also from Thamesford PS was the first the runner up.

The competition was only available to elementary students who live in Zorra Township. The first place winners were given $100 cash for their efforts and the 1st runners up were each given $75.

Military Historian Steven Smith brought a display about Benjamin Franklin Youngs who was born and raised in Brooksdale. He joined the First Michigan Volunteer Sharpshooters and served in 1863 and 1864 during the American Civil War as a Corporal. On June 17th 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia he captured the enemy flag and for this earned the Medal of Honor which is the highest award giving to any American soldier. He received the original one in 1864, but his name was misspelled, so in 1914 he received the new version of the medal with the correct spelling of Youngs. Both of these medals were on display in a window box.
