Increased Police Presence in Ayr

Four break ins have been reported in the last two months in the Village of Ayr, including two over the weekend.

AYR - Waterloo Regional Police have increased their patrols in the Village of Ayr after a rash of break and enters in the small community.

Four break ins have been reported in the last two months including two over the weekend. On Friday night a family came home to find a man wearing a mask and holding a knife, while another attempted break in happened on Saturday at 3 p.m. in broad daylight.

Corporate Communications for WRP Alana Holtem tells Heart FM police have increased their presence in the Village.

"Waterloo Regional Police have assigned an increased police presence in the area, that is to accomplish a couple of things, we are trying to bring a sense of calm, in a small community where word travels fast and things like this don't necessarily happen all the time and we want to get the message out that we are out there, we are looking into and we will find out who is responsible."

She adds the break ins have caused quite a scare in the community.

"There were two cases where someone was actually home at the time or had walked in at the time, which you can imagine is very scary for the individual and in the case of last week the person actually confronted the individual in their home and that is not something we would recommend as our main concern is for the public's personal safety."

Holtem says they were at the Community Centre in Ayr on Friday night to answer questions from residents and provide tips on how you can prevent your home. She says they are telling people in the friendly community to lock your doors.

"Often times it is well meaning people that leave their doors unlocked, especially in a small town community like Ayr, first and foremost you have to make sure your home is secure whether your home or not and lock all of your doors and windows, also make sure you know who has access to information as to when you are going to be home or not home and do not post on social media when you are leaving the house."

You can find a complete list of tips on how to protect your property at the Waterloo Regional police web site.
