Ingersoll Residents Want Rec

Citizens group plans to work hand in glove with Town of Ingersoll to build a new recreation facility in the community.

INGERSOLL — An informal group of Ingersoll residents is trying to spark the conversation in the community about the need for a new recreation facility.

After reports that female hockey players had no choice but to leave town to find ice-time, Rob Parsons,  Andy White and Adam Funnell launched an online survey last month to gauge community interest in a new complex to augment or replace the aging Ingersoll District Memorial Centre.

"Within 24 hours we had over 100 people that were very passionate about getting involved, jumping right in, doing whatever they could to make this happen. So we knew right off the bat we had struck a chord," Funnell said.

The group has spoken with town staff and Funnell believes there is an opportunity for his group to work with the municipality.

"They've been excellent. They made us aware of their position and what their long term goals were and there is certainly opportunity for the two groups to work together," he said.

Funnell's group continues to "do their homework," studying similar situations in other towns where citizens approached their towns to lobby for improved recreation amenities.

"A lot of them started this way, where it has been a group of people who got together and said 'Okay, what's our next step here?'"

When the time comes, Funnell hopes his group will help riase funds for the project.

Funnell believes it could take anywhere from six to eight years from now before a new facility opens for public use.
