Jr. Fire Chief Knows the Importance of Two Ways Out

Does your family have a fire escape plan? The Woodstock Fire Department has been making the rounds of local schools this week, teaching kids the importance of knowing what to do if you wake up to a fire. "Have two ways out" is the theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week, and Fire Information Officer Lisa Woods says its something they're telling the kids to bring home to their parents. "Parents get very busy, and they've got a lot going on. But we want to remind them this is a good week to do a fire escape plan. Most schools are going to do a fire drill this week, and we're telling the kids to go home and do it as well at home so you know what to do." Part of this week's festivities included the Jr. Fire Chief for a day contest. This year's winner is Grade 8 student Maddy Keenan, whose been riding around in a fire truck today. "They picked me up at my house and dropped me off at school. They picked me up at 10:45 and took me back to the fire hall. We talked and then we had lunch." Keenan spent the afternoon at the Fire Department, and signed a declaration with the Fire Chief and Mayor (pictured right). She also got to wear some fire gear and participate in some demonstrations. Keenan was selected based on a poster she made for Fire Prevention week, which stressed the importance of having an escape plan. "It had Sparky (WFD Mascot) on it, a map of 'Two Ways Out', and a couple drawings of fire."
