Kids Out Of School

Oxford OPP are reminding motorists to watch for kids and review pool safety as school let's out for summer vacation.

OXFORD COUNTY - Summer fun doesn't have to turn into summer tragedy.

As school lets out for the season, Oxford OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik says it's time to review pool safety.

"We want to make sure that our kids are safe and with the hot weather happening now, make sure that kids are supervised in pools, following pools rules, making sure they are safe around the water."

She says kids being out of school also adds to the attention needed to be given by drivers.

"There may be more kids that are on the street during the day time so we want to make sure that the drivers and motorists are aware that kids could be out there especially near parks and recreational areas out on their bicycles so making sure we are observing and slowing down."

Narancsik says parents aren't always home with their kids during the summer so they need to sit them down and have a talk.

"Maybe just refresh their memories as to the walking rules, using the cross walks, following the lights, following the rules about bicycle helmets is important because it's bicycle season and making sure they are always with someone so they are safe walking from destination to destination."

She adds bicycles are considered a motor vehicle and should be driven on the road, not sidewalks.
