Life Sentence

New legislation coming to keep Canada's most dangerous behind bars, for good.

Justice Minister Peter MacKay is outlining intended legislation that would lock some felons up and throw away the key.

He says criminals who are convicted of the worst crimes like multiple murders or repeated sexual assaults on children, could spend their entire lives behind bars.

MacKay says the forthcoming provisions, promised in this week's throne speech, would be applied very narrowly to offenders who have committed the most heinous, multiple violent crimes.

But one critic, Neil Boyd, a criminologist at Simon Fraser University in B-C, says the planned law just appeals to angry voters who demand harsher punishments.
