Local Firefighter Wins Triathlon

You could call him Woodstock's Ironman. Local firefighter Rob Bertrand took 1st place at the Canadian Iron 226 Triathlon in Ottawa. The event was held September 1st, featuring a 3.8-km swim, a 180-km bike ride, followed by a 42.2-km run. Bertrand (pictured right) finished in 10-hours, 46-minutes and 14-seconds. He says it was by far his best finish. "I'm pretty happy with my time, I don't think I could have done any better. It was about an hour-and-a-half better than my previous time." Bertrand told Heart FM he's really not sure what compels him to compete, other than to be in shape and be outdoors. "It's quite a challenge, and I enjoy all three sports. Running is my strong suit but by the time you get to the running...the ability to run tired I guess you could say is an acquired skill." Bertrand won a wet suit, a gift certificate to a bike shop in Ottawa and a 1st place medal. He credits the win to the support of his wife and kids, and the local athletes he trains with including an impromptu Woodstock Triathlon group.
