Marathon for Make-a-Wish

Woodstock man raising funds, awareness for children with life-threatening illnesses

A Woodstock man is getting ready to run his first marathon next week - at the age of 49.

Steve Owen has a goal of running a marathon before he turns 50 later this year, and he'll make his attempt at the Toronto Scotiabank Marathon this coming Sunday.  "I'm very excited, very apprehensive...it's a long way and I've never run that distance before so I'm quite nervous about the last 6-miles."

But Owen has some extra motivation to power through his marathon, as he's running in support of the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Southwestern Ontario.  "I'm doing it for the local chapter.  I've met and had some time with the Make-a-Wish team down in London and they do a fantastic job.  They grant between 50 and 75 wishes a year to children between 3 and 18."  (faced with life threatening medical conditions)

Runners from the area are trying to raise a total of $25,000 for Make-a-Wish.

Steve set out with a goal of $1000, but is well over $6000 at this point.

While nervous about the race, he says after spending some time with the organization, he has the inspiration he needs to finish.  "They told me a few stories about some specific kids and I know I'll be thinking of them, and thinking of all the people who have supported me all the way through this, my wife and friends who have put up with me training, so yeah, there's a lot of inspiration."
