Mayor: City May Take Residence in Reg Hall

The city will be spending close to $200,000 to fix up the old Reg Hall building. Tenders have come in higher than expected to remove hazardous materials, and repair a leaky roof, among other things. The lowest bid came in at just over $187,000. Mayor Pat Sobeski says otherwise, the building is in good shape. "Structurally, it's pretty good. They're doing some work on the roof, there is some leakage around the mechanical units, but generally, the bones of the building are good." Part of the back of the building may have to be demolished. Sobeski says there has been some interest in the building, and he says may have interest in occupying a floor to free up some elbow room at City Hall. "There's been quite a few ideas floating around. A couple of groups have come in and looked. But we're looking at City Hall, we have a few department busting at the seems, so maybe there is some thought that because of the proximity to the Reg Hall building, we might be able to use one of the floors as a city annex." The city took the building over last year, after the previous owners fell behind by over $300,000 in owed taxes. It was previously Reg Hall's Department store, and an office products store until 2004. It's been vacant ever since. Check out this week's Webchat with the Mayor (below) for more on what's ahead for the building.
