National 211 Day On February 11th

February 11th is National 211 Day which is meant to shine a light on the 211 service.

OXFORD COUNTY - Thursday February 11th is National 211 Day. 211 a program run by the United Way that is meant to help people get vital information about health, social, and government services available to them in their community. Kelly Gilson, the Executive Director of United Way Oxford, tells us more about the 211 service.

"211 is a 24 hour 7 day a week access point. You can call 211 and get information from a trained information and refferal specialist on all kinds of human, social service, health and government service questions. Your one stop, your first stop, for questions you may have about the community".

According to Gilson, those who work at the 211 call centers are trained to answer a variety of different questions.

"Some are very simple questions and some are about very complex human services. They are trained to help with both".

National 211 Day is a promotion which is meant to shine a light on the 211 service. Gilson says the main focus is to get people to make the right call.

"It's easier to find help when you make the right call. We want to inform the public of what 211 is, so we can perhaps divert non-emergency 911 calls".

The 211 service has been offered in Oxford County for about 5 years now. You can speak to an information specialist by dailing 211 on your phone. You can also find information on the 211 website 211ontario.ca
