National Fire Prevention Week

Working smoke alarms can be the difference between life and death in the case of a fire.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department is gearing up for National Fire Prevention Week across Canada.

A number of public out reach events will happen between October 8th to the 14th.

Lisa Woods Public Information Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department tell Heart FM they will be working hard to get their message out.

"We are going to be out in town this week knocking on doors, making sure people understand the importance of having a home escape plan.  Plan two ways out is the theme this year"

With the change of the season, it's a good time to change the batteries on all your smoke alarms.

"Sunday November 5th is the actual change of time, to change the clocks and change the batteries, its very important that a smoke alarm has a fresh battery to do its job properly.  We want you to change them with the clocks."

Woods adds they have had some serious fires in Woodstock this year and they want to make sure everyone is doing their part with fire prevention.

"80 percent of fires happen in the kitchen and they are very devastating, so make sure your looking when your cooking, don't leave the kitchen and make sure you are putting out your cigarettes in an ash tray."
