New Driving Laws?

Province considering demerit points for distracted driving, and penalties for "dooring"

Could Ontario motorists face demerit points for getting caught texting, or using their phone while driving?

It sounds like the provincial Liberals are looking at making that change, as a spokesman for Transportation Minister Glen Murray confirmed today they are looking at  changes to penalties for distracted driving.  Murray in on the record as saying he personally supports tougher penalties against distracted drivers.

Two recent court rulings upheld Ontario's distracted driving laws, even if a driver is simply holding their phone while driving.

Another new law being looked at is for "dooring".  That's when a driver opens their car door suddenly, in the path of a cyclist.  There's no word on what kind of penalties the government is considering.
