The Ontario government is dishing out harsher penalties on distracted driving.

ESSEX COUNTY - The OPP is reminding drivers in Essex County that the penalties for texting and driving are about to get more real.

The Ontario government is introducing new distracted driving laws, which is now in effect since January 1st.

The new minimum fine for a first offence will increase from $490 to $615, if settled out of court, with a maximum fine of up to $1,000. That first offence will also include a mandatory licence suspension and the loss of three demerit points.

Essex OPP Inspector Glenn Miller says the idea behind the new penalties is to ensure a safer trip for drivers on the road.

"Our goal is to keep our roadways safe for everyone and the increase in penalties is indicative that many drivers continue to disregard this law. Driving remains a privilege and upon conviction of this offence you will lose your driver's licence."
