The County of Brant introduces the first roundabout, which will be one of seven on Rest Acres Road.

BRANT COUNTY - The County of Brant to introduce their first roundabout on Rest Acres Road just south of Paris.

The new roundabout is one of 7 to be put in along Rest Acres Road in the upcoming years. Roundabouts are being constructed more as they improve the traffic flow and allow quick and smooth driving.

The Ministry of Transportation says roundabouts are:

- Safe for as your moving at a reduced speed thus decreases the chance for a serious crash.

- Allows high volume vehicles to be more efficient in turning left then a left hand turn signal.

- Less stops and shorter delays which saves time and reduces time vehicles idle and air pollution.

- Cost effective as they eliminate the maintenance and electricity cost.

Mark Eby is the Director of Infrastructure for Brant County and says.

"The roundabouts on Rest Acres Road are the first ones in the County."

He also added.

"We want residents to feel comfortable and safe using the roundabouts."

The Ministry of Transportation also has some helpful roundabout tips for drivers:

When approaching a roundabout:

- Reduce your speed.
- Keep to the right side of the splitter island.
- Use the right lane for the intended destination.
- Pay attention to the pedestrian crosswalks and any pedestrians that could be crossing.
- Yield to cyclists and any traffic already going through the roundabout.
- Stop to vehicles already in the roundabout and if the way is not clear.
- Enter the roundabout if there's a gap in traffic.

When driving through a roundabout:

- Stay to the right of the centre island and drive in a counter-clockwise direction.
- Do not pass a large vehicle or change lanes.
- Do not stop in the roundabout, except to avoid a collision.

When leaving a roundabout:

- Use the right-turn signal.
- If you miss a turn, loop again and then exit.

Emergency Vehicles:

- If you happen to be outside the roundabout, pull to the right if you can safely.
- If your inside of the roundabout, drive to your intended turn and leave the roundabout before pulling to the right side.

Large Vehicles

- Larger vehicles need more lanes if need be when they enter or exit. Within the roundabout they could need to use a truck apron.
- Give large vehicles plenty of room.

Pedestrians:

- Cross a the road to the splitter island one at a time.
- Never cross a roundabout by walking over the centre island.
- Cross only when safe and when there is a gap in the traffic.
- There is no traffic signals, this can make it tricky to spot the gaps in traffic, if your visually impaired as someone for assistance if you can.

Cyclists

- Merge into the centre vehicle lane before the bike lane or shoulder ends.
- Stay to the right of the middle lane to avoid collisions with vehicles trying to exit.
-New cyclists should get off their bikes and cross a roundabout as if they are pedestrians.
