Nominees Named for Oxford Stewardship Award

The Oxford Stewardship Award is presented every year to landowners who have done outstanding work in terms of enhancing the County's natural environment.

WOODSTOCK - The nominees have been named for the ninth annual Oxford Stewardship Award.

They are the Grieve family from Zorra Township for retiring an area of cropland by creating a wetland marsh to reduce overland runoff during storms and add biodiversity to the landscape.

Jim and Carol Harrison from Zorra Township in recognition of their efforts to retire 7.5 acres of agricultural floodplain along the middle branch of the Thames River by planting 3,900 seedlings.

Scotty and Jodie Zehr from East Zorra Tavistock for diverting clean water away from a livestock exercise yard, planting hardwood trees and wildlife shrubs and creating a wetland marsh.

Manager of Planning Policy at the County of Oxford Paul Michael's explains the criteria for the stewardship award.

"The award is presented to a landowner who has done outstanding works in terms of enhancing the County's natural environment. The recipients for those awards usually do things like tree planting, wetland restoration, soil conservation, water quality improvement, really anything that can improve the natural environment."

The Oxford Stewardship Award recipient is chosen by Stewardship Oxford and the Oxford Soil & Crop Improvement Association. The applicants are chosen from the Oxford County Clean Water Program. The Clean Water Program, administered by the Upper Thames Region Conservation Authority, helps to fund the conservation and enhancement of natural heritage resources in Oxford County.

Warden David Mayberry will hand out the award at the Oxford County council meeting on Wednesday night.
