Norwich Debate

145 people showed up to the Norwich Candidate debate held at the Community Complex.

NORWICH- It was relatively quiet in the Norwich community complex that was until the audience were given the opportunity to ask questions. A few disgruntled residents brought up decade old issues which new candidates were unable to answer to. The top concern dominating the debate was a question raised by a resident about what candidates would do about the lack of senior’s homes available in Norwich. Some residents spoke of neighbours having to move to other municipalities because they could not find available long-term care. Mayoral candidate Larry Martin said that a place needs to be found for seniors, pointing out tax dollars need to be considered.

The primary focus of many candidate speeches was fixing and maintaining crumbling infrastructure such as bridges and roads within the township. One candidate Roy King suggested keeping the community complex open on Sundays. Ward 3 candidate Jim Palmer suggested imposing an 8 year limit on councillor terms.

SIT DOWN WITH CANDIDATES FOR MAYOR

Over 145 people in attendance, accounting for just over 1 percent of the Norwich township population. There was one face missing at the Norwich council debate, Ward 4 candidate Wayne Buchanan. Due to personal circumstances Buchanan was unable to attend, but a kind neighbour stepped in and read his speech.

Voters will have three weeks to evaluate candidates before casting their ballots on October 27th.

Mayor Candidates Response To Debate:

Larry Martin- "I think it went well, there was good input by all candidates, there were a lot of very good points raised tonight, I think whoever gets elected in the next council should pay some serious consideration."

Don Doan (incumbent) - "I thought it was a good debate, we had a really good turnout which was great to see the interest in the community."
