Norwich Man Selected For Prestigious Scholarship

A turkey farmer and banker from Norwich will be touring the globe through the Nuffield Agriculture Scholarship

NORWICH - A turkey farmer from Norwich is one of three people to earn a Canadian Nuffield Farming Scholarship.

Clair Doan will be given $15,000 to study supply management in the turkey industry. He will be working on the project for the next 18 months which will include trips to Ireland, Australia, New Zealand England and Holland to learn from other countries. Along with being a Turkey Farmer Doan is also the Associate Vice President of Agriculture Banking at the National Bank of Canada and says he will be looking at poultry, but also how those countries have evolved out of supply manage sectors, particularly in dairy operations.

"Over the course of the 18 months is when I will be participating in the tours and after that, really it is about engaging all of the farmers and my local contacts back here in Ontario to really add value to their own farms, so part of the piece will be communicating with them throughout my Nuffield journey."

Doan says he will be making formal presentations when he returns to Canada after the trip and will also have a full report on his findings.

"A report will be published through the Nuffield international organization, so that will accessible to anyone throughout the globe and then really outside of the formal written report, I think it is about having conservation's with people and sharing my findings through the presentations and talking with farmers."

Tony Balkwill of Paris, and Tim Smith of Alberta are the other two people earn the scholarship and they will study precision agriculture and the social licence for sustainable beef production.
