OPP Remind Parents To Speak To Their Kids About Street Safety

Provincial Police are reminding parents to talk to their children about being street smart.

OXFORD COUNTY - OPP would like to remind parents of the importance of speaking with children about staying safe in the street.

They suggest that parents survey their neighborhoods for obvious dangers and hazardous areas. Areas such as abandoned buildings, construction sites, electrical generating stations and difficult intersections can all be dangerous to children. By knowing the types of dangers in these areas you are able to inform your children about the risks involved with spending times in these types of places.

Talking with your children about identifying a stranger is also recommended. Strangers can be male or female, young or old. While kids don't need to be paranoid they do need to be cautious of people they don't know. Police are reminding parents to speak with their kids about what to do if approached by somebody they don't know. If they are offered a ride, asked for directions or if somebody takes interest in what they're doing, offers them something free then kids should step back, say no thank you, and run to a safe place like school, home or a police station to tell an adult they trust.

Also, let them know what to do if somebody tries to pull them into a car, a building or anywhere else. Have them kick and scream, drop onto the ground, grab something like a tree or post and keep yelling for help.

There is always more safety in numbers so implement the buddy system. Always make sure your child is walking with a friend or a sibling.
