OPP Warns Parents On Smoking In Vehicles

OPP received multiple reports of parents smoking with young kids in the back of the car last Sunday.

OXFORD COUNTY - OPP would like to remind parents that it's illegal to be smoking cigarettes with anyone under 16 in the car.

OPP would also like to remind people that the smoke from cigarettes is 27 times more concentrated in a vehicle than a smoker's home. This comes as OPP had 2 separate calls on Sunday, October, 14th at 5:30 p.m. and around 9 p.m. stating they saw drivers smoking with young children in the car.

Constable Ed Sanchuk was very clear in saying it's the lack of common sense in parents.

"Obviously when you have the windows rolled up in the vehicle and your smoking cigarettes, it's not only unhealthy for you but your children because it's second hand smoke. So we need people to use some common sense and if you're going to smoke a cigarette then step out of your vehicle and make sure you're not smoking around your children."

Sanchuk also states that the OPP are reminding drivers of this issue because they had 2 separate calls about smoking in a vehicle with passengers under 16 years old.

"It is concerning because under that law effective January 21, 2009 you shouldn't be smoking in your car and we should just be using some common sense often take extra care to protect children in vehicles; having smoke-free cars should be part of that protection."

If you happen to witness anyone smoking with passengers you suspect are under 16 then call OPP immediately at 1-888-310-1122.
