OPP Will Enforce Weight Restrictions

Oxford OPP are ready for the Spring thaw and will be targeting trucks over the next two months with overweight loads.

Oxford OPP and the West Region Safety Division will be teaming up to enforce weight restrictions on our highways for two months.

They will be checking transport trucks starting on March 1st as a way to reduce road damage to Township and County roads. During the Spring thaw extra heavy loads can cause damage on our roadways that are not built to handle the weight during Spring when the frost is melting. This type of damage usually leads to wash boarding, pot holes, and pavement deterioration. Each Township has designated roads for use and the secondary roads have clearly posted signs advising of the weight restrictions.

The by-Law includes that no person shall, during the months of March and April:

- Operate a dual axle tank truck, used exclusively for the transportation of liquid or gaseous heating fuel, and no two axle truck, used exclusively for the transportation of livestock feed, on a highway were any axle transmits to the highway a weight in excess of 7500 kilograms.

- Operate a commercial motor vehicle or trailer where any axle of such commercial vehicle or trailer transmits to the highway a weight in excess of 5000 kilograms.

- Operate a vehicle having a carrying capacity in excess of 1000 kilograms other than a motor vehicle or trailer where the weight upon any millimetre in the width of tire exceeds five kilograms.
