OSPCA Warns Dangers Of Animals In Hot Cars

Members of the Ontario SPCA say it is extremely dangerous to leave your furry friend in a vehicle on a hot day.

Members of the Ontario SPCA want pet owners to know that it is illegal to leave your pet in a vehicle on a hot day.

Inspector Brandon James says leaving pets in vehicles in hot conditions can have scary consequences.

"With the windows all the way down, parked in the shade, the cars temperature will rise very quickly. When a dog’s temperature is around 39 degrees Celsius and only goes up a few degrees, then it starts to cause some serious health issues which can ultimately lead to death."

This condition is called heat distress. Here's a list of some of the symptoms to watch out for:

- Excessive panting.

- Excessive drooling.

- Unable to get up.

- Unconscious.

James tells us what people should do if they spot an animal in heat distress in a hot vehicle.

"Stand by the car, take down the licence plate, contact 310-SPCA which is our 24 dispatch line. They will dispatch an officer and if an officer from the OSPCA is not available or readily close to that location then they will contact the police and have them attend. Second to that we would ask that someone run into the store and have that animal owner paged."

Smashing the vehicles windows can potentially hurt the animal locked inside and can get you into some legal troubles.

Pet owners are advised to leave their animals at home with a fan/air conditioning and with lots of water on hot days.
