Oxford Attack: The Golden Girls

Oxford Attack U14 Major Bantam Girls are bringing home the gold after a tournament in Oakville.

In just their second season as a team, the Oxford Attack U14 Major Bantam Girls team came home from Oakville with Ontario Cup gold medals this past weekend.

The girls, coached by Jon Empringham, Roger Hall and Amy Hendriksen, went undefeated over the weekend, finishing with a 4-0 record. On Friday night, the Attack, who were seeded fifth, beat top-seeded St. Thomas 18-16, in a game that saw defences rule the court and offences struggle. But Oxford scored a couple of baskets early in the fourth quarter and held on for the win.

On Saturday, the offence got going, and the Attack beat fourth-seeded London CYO 47-25. The girls then kept the offence rolling with a critical 43-32 win over eighth-seeded Canadian Basketball Academy. This final win put the Attack in the gold medal game against the second-seeded Kingston Impact on Sunday afternoon.

In the final, both teams played exceptionally well defensively, but struggled offensively through the first three quarters of the game. After the third quarter, Oxford trailed 22-21, the first time in the tournament they had trailed at the end of a period. However, the offence perked up in the fourth quarter, and the Attack took the gold with a well-deserved 36-33 victory. This win capped off a strong finish to the season for the Attack, who really came together in the last month or so, playing their best basketball of the season.
