Oxford County Aligns Zero Waste Goals With The Ministry

Oxford County council support the Ministry of Environment's discussion paper on Reducing Litter and Waste.

OXFORD COUNTY - The Ministry of Environment's Reducing Litter and Waste received praise from Oxford County council, but the County says more could be done.

The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks released a discussion paper outlining objectives, all of which align with Oxford's goals to move towards zero waste goals.

Warden Larry Martin says they support the province's outlook, but they're not going as far as what the County is doing.

"It's not going as far as what we're doing, but at the same time it's going to supplement and help. There'll be that much less that we have to deal with if they can find something to either eliminate it all together or recycle it, re-use it. And it's just a correction as towards zero waste. 90% reduction is what we're looking at, if we can."

He says they're all on target to meet the same goal.

"I think we're all headed in the right direction. It's not quite as far as where Oxford is going but at the same time it's also going to help Oxford do what they are doing, so it's not as if we're butting heads on it."

Some of the objectives stated in the paper include producer responsibility, product bans, food and organic waste policies. The County is making recommendations such as investment in proper data management and funding for alternative resource recovery.

A key outcome from the province's strategy is to go from the current blue box program to an extended producer responsibility approach. Martin adds it will cost the County a lot of money to transition to EPR.

The EPR approach puts more responsibility on manufactures to reduce waste by either re-using, re-purchasing or recycling materials that were used in the original products and packaging.
