Oxford County Takes Steps to Fight Doctor Shortage

Estimates say we need to attract 26 new doctors to the county over the next five years to maintain status quo.

County council has agreed to a funding request for $25 000 from the Oxford Physician Recruitment Group and the request will be referred to the 2016 budget deliberations.

Chair of the Oxford Physician Group Dr. Gerry Roland tells Heart FM they were happy to see council support their requests.

"The resolution was in support of our request for funding and also that the council would write to the Premier and the appropriate ministers expressing our concerns over the physician situation in Oxford County and to seek delegation status to other meetings political personage in Queens Park."

The group is looking for the money to pay for advertising and to help with their new website as they look to attract more family physicians to the area. An estimated 6 000 people in Oxford do not have a family doctor right now and it is estimated we will need to attract 26 new doctors to the region over the next five years just to keep the status quo. Roland tells Heart FM about some of the things they are doing to attract more physicians to the area.

"Well we are doing a lot, we are working on almost every level; we a working with health first Ontario, we are working with the medical schools, we are advertising in the provincial and federal medical journals, we are advertising locally, we are writing directly to the physicians who teach family practice residence."

Right now the County has 50 family doctors and most of them are getting up in a age with a number near retirement.
