Oxford OPP Briefs

Briefs include Online safety dating tips from the Oxford OPP, a daytime B&E in Delhi and a Simcoe man who called 9-1-1 looking for a ride home from the hospital.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County OPP are reminding residents to be cautious when online dating.

They are providing the following tips for anyone looking for love on the Internet:

- Get to know the other person before meeting them offline.
- Don't disclose personal information before meeting in person.
- Always meet in public.
- Meet for the first time in a populated, public location - never in a private or remote location, and never at your date's residence.
- Stay in a public place - it's best not to go back to your date's home or bring them back to yours on the first date. If your date pressures you, end the date and leave at once.
- Tell a friend - inform a friend or family member of your plans and when and where you're going.
- If you own a cell phone, make sure you have it with you.
- Stay sober - keep a clear mind and avoid doing anything that would impair your judgment or cause you to make a decision you could regret.
- Drive yourself to and from the first meeting - just in case things don't work out, you need to be in control of your own ride - even if you take a taxi.
- Keep personal items with you at all times - you don't want to risk having personal information stolen.
- If you're drinking, keep your drink with you at all times so it can't be tampered with.

Please be vigilant both online and offline for your own safety.

NORFOLK COUNTY - Norfolk OPP is once again reminding residents to only call 9-1-1 for emergencies.

Early Friday morning, 9-1-1 dispatch got a call from a Simcoe man who wanted a ride home from a London hospital. Officers were able to make contact with the male and instructed him to contact a local cab company directly.

On average, it takes at least two officers approximately thirty minutes to respond, investigate and clear the call. This puts enormous pressure on OPP resources when officers respond to unnecessary calls that can be prevented.

The use of 9-1-1 for emergency response continues to save lives when used appropriately and the OPP want those who need urgent help to use 9-1-1. The OPP also encourages families to discuss proper use of 9-1-1 to prevent hang ups and misdials from occurring.

What you can do to prevent misdials:

- Make sure you know the number you are dialing.

- Lock your cell phone number pad.

- Teach your children the proper use of 9-1-1.

- If you dial 9-1-1 by mistake, do not hang up. Stay on the phone so the dispatcher can ascertain your safety and let them know it was a mistake.

The OPP is urging all Norfolk County residents to use 9-1-1 when there is an emergency.

Please do not call 9-1-1 about a power outage or to inquire about road conditions or if you have a sick raccoon on your property, to order food or if you need a ride home. This is NOT an emergency.
