Parents Could Be Held Responsible For Out of Control Prom Parties

The OPP are reminding both parents and students to celebrate safely.

It's Prom season in Oxford County and many students will be celebrating the milestone with a huge party afterwards.

With this in mind the OPP wanted to put out some reminders to kids and parents to make sure everyone gets through high school safely and without a criminal record. Constable Ed Sanchuk tells Heart FM one thing you have to consider is that if you are hosting one of these parties you are responsible for all of the guests. "If you are hosting an after prom or after school graduation party, the people holding that party are ultimately responsible and can be held civilly responsible for the actions of the attendees. So we really want everyone to have a plan in place, absolutely no drinking and driving, and you need to know that the homeowner is civilly liable if alcohol is being served to minors."

Sanchuk says police are asking parents to take an active role in everyone's safety. Parents can influence choices about alcohol and drug use and should talk to their teens about responsible drinking as well as including a plan to stay safe. Teens are at greater risk to harm themselves while drinking alcohol and have a higher risk of bodily harm, alcohol poisoning, assault and sexual assault.

Sanchuk notes excessive drinking can lead to alcohol poisoning and even death. He adds, "Everyone involved, including parents and teens, should receive a firm warning from the host that the party ends immediately at any hint of substance abuse. If you're the parent or teen, state that you'll be prepared to call other parents and/or police if it happens."
