Norfolk OPP are reminding boat owners not to drink and drive this weekend.

LAKE ERIE - Lots of boat enthusiasts will be heading out to Pottahawk Point on Lake Erie this weekend.

The annual get together usually attracts about 2,000 boats and up to 10,000 people depending on the weather.

Constable Ed Sanchuk has some advice for everyone planning to go this Sunday.

"Wear a life jacket or a PFD (personal floatation device) at all times while boating; it's too late to put on life jacket after you have fallen in. Do not operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, it's against the law and has the same penalties as if you were driving your vehicle."

Sanchuk adds Norfolk OPP will present to make sure everyone is following the rules.

"I can tell you that we have saved lives being in the water. We have had individuals attempting to swim back from Pottahawk Point that almost drowned, we've had people passed out, we've had a lot of different assaults and sexual assaults. The police are there for everyone's safety and the minute that we aren't there people are going to be asking why we weren't there."

Sanchuk says they will be cracking down on anyone getting out of hand.

"It comes down to the fact that once you involve alcohol in this type of environment there is a potential for incidents to occur but we are well prepared and we will respond to any incidents that may arise but we are asking people to use common sense."
