Staff at Tavistock Public School mark Child Abuse Prevention month

Oxford's CAS takes Child Abuse Prevention message to schools

It's Child Abuse Prevention month, and the Oxford CAS has been taking the message out to local schools.

Teachers have a "duty to report" suspected cases of neglect and abuse, as frontline workers with children.

But the CAS says everyone shares that same responsibility.  "The protection and well-being of a child is everyone's responsibility."  He says there are visual reminders this month you may notice, "We have the purple ribbons we ask people to wear as a reminder.  We have purple wrist bands that have 'Use Your Voice' inscribed on them and that's a reminder for everyone to use their voice to prevent child abuse."

'Use Your Voice' is also a website people can turn to for information concerning child welfare issues.

If you are unsure about whether or not you should be reporting a case, Oxford CAS Executive Director Bruce Burbank says the answer is just a phone call away.  "They can always call and speak to one of our intake workers without necessarily giving the name at the outset, and describe the situation and concern.  Based on that discussion it may or may not result in a report being made."

Burbank says the number of reported cases of abuse in the community remains "consistent".
